I finally stopped doubting myself – here’s how…

Sorry but if you’re reading this post because of the title, then I’ve lured you here under false pretences – I still doubt myself all the time.

The difference, though, between me ‘self-doubting’ now, and me ‘self-doubting’ 3 years ago, is that 3 years ago the feeling of doubt stopped me in my tracks, and now, I stop it in its tracks.

I’d love to tell you how I made this change, and I hope it helps you if self-doubt is running your life.

The feeling of self-doubt is brutal. It has the power to trap you into a small box of a life because it convinces you that you can’t have, and don’t deserve, everything you desire, and if you dare try to get it you’ll definitely fail because you’re a piece of crap.

At least, that’s how self-doubt used to operate in my life.

I’m not someone who has a lot of regrets, but as I look back I can definitely see where self-doubt caused me to say no to amazing opportunities when I should’ve said yes, and how it caused me to postpone my happiness.

And as I look back I realize that my self-doubt was a comfortable excuse not to do the things that I really wanted to do, but which seemed difficult, or uncertain, or for which I felt unworthy.

I decided – somewhere between saying no to the chance to live in California and almost giving up on being a spiritual entrepreneur – that I didn’t want self-doubt to control my decision making any more.

And as soon as I had that thought, I saw, for the first time, that I had a choice about what the feeling of self-doubt could MEAN in my life.

I had always chosen that self-doubt meant STOP and I used it to excuse myself from effort, joy and greatness.

But what if, I wondered, self-doubt could MEAN Lauren you’re doubting yourself because you really care about this. Your self-doubt is telling you that this is important, keep going.

So I started playing around with this idea that my self-doubt meant I was doing something really meaningful and important and that I should keep going.

…and the transformation in my life was amazing.

I started to feel grateful for my self doubt.

I began to see that it’s ok to doubt myself and to keep acting towards my dream anyway (and the dream began to come alive!)

I became more committed to my desires and goals and started to own them and appreciate them.

I decided to create better plans so that if I began to doubt myself, I’d have it right there in black and white what I had to do next and this meant I got more done, more efficiently and with less emotional drama.

Self-doubt took on a whole new role in my life because I decided to change its meaning. It once was a painful, fearful reason to stop and step away from anything outside my comfort zone – now I ONLY do things I doubt I can complete because I know my self-doubt  is not about ‘a true indication that I’ll fail’, but is evidence that whatever idea I’ve had or action I’m about to take is truly important to me; that I’m expanding into new adventures; and that I have an opportunity to grow into the person I want to be and the life I want to live.

Not only has self-doubt loosened its restrain on me, but I’ve come to cherish the feeling of growing beyond the familiar.

Now I’d love to hear from you! Comment below and tell me…

Have you allowed your self-doubt to mean ‘stop’?

What would change if you decided self-doubt meant ‘go’, ‘you’re expanding’, do more, try again, renew your enthusiasm, make it work?

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
